There are well over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids in the cannabis and Industrial hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.

Industrial Hemp is a sister plant to the Cannabis plant (marijuana, weed, grass). One of the compounds common to both is Cannabidiol (ie. CBD oil). CBD from the hemp plant is the exact same cannabinoid as CBD from the marijuana plant. It has the same chemical structure. Interestingly enough, CBD is the most prevalent cannabinoid  in the hemp plant. And the best part is that CBD is not psychoactive, it does not get you “high”

CBD that is extracted from the hemp plant is also known as hemp oil. This oil aka CBD can be extracted and used in many products. It has historically been a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), is the famous cannabinoid, it is the primary cannabinoid found in cannabis, and it is THC which is the cause of the psychoactive sensation known as getting “high”. Over the past few decades, thru careful plant breeding,  growers have been  able to increase THC levels at the expense of other compounds. CBD is the 2nd most prevalent cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. As the popularity of CBD has grown more and more strains are being grown with a better balance of THC and CBD.

The Hemp plant is federally legal to grow since it is genetically not capable of producing any percentage of THC that is considered psychoactive, less than 0.3%. It has been said if you smoke hemp your lungs will fail before you get high.

This non-psychoactive quality of CBD is exactly what makes it an appealing to people the mind-altering effects of THC or side effects that accompany most pharmaceutical drugs.

Since CBD can be extracted from both the cannabis plant and the hemp plant there is some confusion. CBD that is extracted from the cannabis (marijuana) plant is viewed differently by the Federal Government from the CBD extracted from the Industrial Hemp plant.

The cannabis and hemp plants can be thought of as cousins, sharing some common DNA. But Cousins are not siblings and certainly not twins.

The cannabis plant is genetically unique with one key difference from the hemp plant. That is its ability to produce high levels of THC. CBD products from the cannabis plant commonly include THC and are only available in legally licensed Medical Marijuana dispensaries in states that have legalized medical marijuana or have adult use programs.

The industrial hemp plant was differentiated from cannabis by the Federal Farm Bill of 2014 with additional clarifying language in the 2018 Farm Bill. In a nutshell, the Farm Bill allows Hemp to be grown and used to make products. The products made from the hemp plant are federally legal in all 50 states. One of the primary facts acknowledged by the bill is that industrial hemp cannot produce THC in a percentage great enough to have psycho-active effects. The recent passage of the 2018 Farm Bill clearly states that Industrial Hemp contains CBD and less than 0.3% THC. The 2018 bill also directed the DEA to remove hemp and all hemp products from the illegal substance schedules. With this more specific and precise language the 2018 Farm Bill has cleared up any ambiguities the 2014 Farm Bill had created.

So yes, CBD sourced from the hemp plant IS LEGAL to purchase online. No, you can’t get high from it. It is NOT WEED. Companies that comply with the 2018 Farm Bill can ship their products anywhere in the United States.

There are lots of terms used to describe CBD products. Most products are referred to as CBD, and others are described as CBD isolate, full spectrum or hemp oil extract.

So what is the difference?

Hemp oil extract: This is a common way to refer CBD oil. It is as it says, oil from the hemp plant. It is an alternate way of saying CBD oil. CBD oil is different from Hemp Seed Oil.

Hemp Seed Oil: Hemp seed oil comes from pressing/crushing the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp seeds contain no CBD, therefore hemp seed oil can not contain CBD. Hemp seeds are incredibly nutritious and contain over 30% fat and are an excellent source of 2 fatty acids, omega 6 and omega 3. But again, Hemp seeds contain no CBD, so hemp seed oil has no CBD in it.

CBD Isolate: CBD isolate is 99.9% pure CBD. During the extraction process, all elements and compounds of the hemp plant are removed, this includes all the terpenes, waxes, oils, chlorophyll etc. What is left is pure CBD…and nothing else.  If the product description says contains CBD chances are it is cbd isolate.

Full-spectrum CBD: If the product description says Full Spectrum CBD all elements and compounds of the plant were kept. Full-spectrum CBD is full of all the terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids, and fatty acids found in hemp, all of which have their own therapeutic value and work synergistically together to create what’s know as the entourage effect. It is important to point out that Full Spectrum products may contain trace amounts of THC. So if you are being drug tested those trace elements of THC which are legal in CBD products made from hemp may be detected.

Broad Spectrum CBD: If the product description says Broad Spectrum CBD all elements and compounds of the plant were kept with one exception, any trace elements of THC are removed. Broad spectrum CBD is therefore still full of all the terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids, and fatty acids found in hemp, all of which have their own therapeutic value and work synergistically together to create what’s know as the entourage effect. It is important to point out that Broad Spectrum products will not contain those trace amounts of THC. So if you are being drug tested those trace elements of THC which are possibly present in Full Spectrum products should not be detectable.

Entourage effect: the Entourage effect describes the benefit you get from ingesting multiple components of the hemp plant together instead of ingesting one component at a time. In other words, it is the beneficial effect of all these compounds working together as opposed to just one or two of these compounds working in isolation.
